A Vision For An IAFF Committed To Fire Fighters And The Labor Movement

Rebuilding Our Legacy of Trade Unionism

Our union was founded over a century ago when "political hacks threatened to sack experienced firefighters and hand out firehouse jobs to loyal cronies, professional fire fighters said enough."

Those lessons still matter today.

The mission of the labor movement starts within our own headquarters and how we operate our own union first.

I promise to practice what we preach.

Professional trade union fire fighters expect their home office and General President to act with honor and to treat our members and staff with respect.

There is no place for bullying, harassment, or typical management tactics within our union.

Far too many tenured, experienced, and qualified labor leaders and staff have been terminated and dismissed under questionable grounds.

This hypocrisy threatens the very foundation of our mission and our union.

Look no further than the current plan of the General President who has asked for tens of thousands of dollars to hire an outside consultant to do a wage study against Local 2 in collective bargaining. Sound familiar?

This typical tactic of city managers is why we have invested so much in to our TAIR division to create a bench of experts who develop Municipal Financial Analysis reports.

Ask yourself why the current leadership is resorting to the tactics of right-to-work bureaucrats and city managers.

My Vision to Restore Our Commitment to Trade Unionism

End Anti-Labor Management Tactics

How we conduct ourselves matters. I will make good on the unrealized campaign promises and issue a complete report on all employees' and contractors' full compensation. I will present to the executive board policies and procedures to ensure that not one cent of member union dues are ever spent employing outside so-called "consultants" to present biased findings against our own Local 2 members.

Enforce Rules Against Workplace Harassment and Intimidation

Employees and staff should not fear the tantrums and out-of-control anger issues of our leadership. All staff, but especially female staff should not have to fear senior leaders and leadership throwing cell phones or office chairs across the room. We would never tolerate this behavior at the local level from command staff and we cannot tolerate it inside of our own operation.

Hire and Appoint Based on Qualifications and Experience

Our union must live up to the principles that we demand in hiring and promotions from our departments. It's no secret that political appointments come with a loyalty test and purity pledge under the current administration. As General President, those unwritten policies and whisper campaigns end. The executive board and I will work together to recruit and retain the most qualified union fire fighters to do the work, and we'll leave politics and personal vendettas behind.

Being fiscally responsible or transparent is a basic expectation of our membership. It's time our deeds match our words.

I promise to be a good steward of our member's dues money.

No story has infuriated and disappointed members more than when they heard that the current leadership wasn't satisfied with the nearly $365,000 per year salary and are now pushing to expand their personal compensation and reimbursements to cover their commuting travel when they choose to show up to work in DC.

Fire fighters want to pay a fair wage for a fair day of work, and we want our elected executive board to all be afforded compensation and reimbursement for reasonable expenses.

But rewriting policies, outside of convention action, to increase their personal annual take home for just showing up to our office, that's simply unacceptable.

And yet, that may still not be enough for the current leadership.

Rumor is that more is still wanted. We already pay for a luxury SUV, which was intended to get the leadership around our headquarters. Now that corporate perk is parked in Boston and we're picking up the tab on luxury cars and limousines when the leadership chooses to come to the office.

Enough is enough.

Per diems, unlimited expense accounts, first class travel, commuter fees. These outlandish corporate suit-style compensation "fringe" benefits would never be allowed in our local unions and shouldn't be allowed in our IAFF.

My Vision to Restore Fiscal Responsibility and Financial Stewardship

Reaffirm the Delegates' Direction in Ottawa. No new benefits for ANYONE outside of Convention.

$365,000 is more than enough and waiting until the convention is more than fair.

As General President, I will restore the system's integrity and our member's faith in the practices and policies that pay the leadership of the union. We need leaders who will work hard to ensure that a new legal council's opinion of an IRS rule will not change our policy or practice without delegate action, especially with regard to highly compensated positions like our leadership. Just because it's permissible under IRS rules doesn't make it right under the principles of our trade union.

Our members pay union dues to advance the mission of our union, not to cover personal travel, commuting time, or to provide a double-dip reimbursement of already funded expenses. It's time for the promises of the campaign to match the practice of the leadership in office.

Rewrite the Travel Policy To End General Use of First Class Airfare

While first class travel may be a benefit that is enjoyed by corporate America executives, as General President I will propose new rules to the executive board that will eliminate most first class travel for the General President.

GST Lima made a point at the Ottawa convention to speak up and show how he sets the example of financial stewardship. He told us that he books primarily coach travel while on IAFF business. I applaud GST Lima for his resolve to our blue collar, trade union labor principals.

While there may be a time when an exception is necessary (such as when traveling with members of Congress), the routine use of paid first-class travel is a bloated expense and waste of our brothers and sisters union dues. As long as our members are fighting for a living wage, I will book coach and deliver the fiscal responsibility our members expect and deserve.

Complete the Promised Review of All Pay, Expense, and Travel Resolutions and Policies.

It's clear that our membership wants to support the hard work and dedication of our full time executive board members. The membership wants to ensure that every member of the IAFF leadership has the resources and programs to help them deliver the service and mission of our union.

But compensation, expense programs, travel, and reimbursements are a mixed bag of policy, convention action resolutions, delegate automated CPI increases, and the changing interpretations of IAFF General Counsel.

As General President, I will work with the GST's office, Trustees, and Executive Board to issue a full report on current policy, resolutions, and CPI-driven changes and draft a new resolution for delegate action by the 2026 IAFF Convention. This new resolution will replace all previous policies and convention actions; and provide a single point for all members to review, amend, and adopt.

We need leadership who will tackle the technology threats and opportunities to secure our union and our mission for the next generation of threats.

I promise to take a strategic, data-driven approach to secure your data from the 9/2/22 database breach.

Today, union members can't even complete a phone call to our IAFF headquarters. That's how broken and dysfunctional our operations have become.

The current leadership has failed to secure our membership data and, worse, has actively misled  our union about the extent of the September 2, 2022 "IT encryption incident" and database "breach." Why can't he just be honest?

The truth is simple.

On September 2, 2022 the IAFF main frame databases, servers, and your personal data were hacked and we, the IAFF were victims of ransomware.

And the Leadership actively directed me and the rest of the union to say nothing and tell no one.

In my District our DVP spoke out and messaged the local presidents with the truth and advice to inform their membership and ask them to change their passwords used on the IAFF website.

In response, the Leadership issued an email lying and saying that the "IAFF was not being held hostage" and told leaders that he "would not recommend sending a communication to your members at this time."

Why was he lying, and what else is he hiding?

Our members deserve honest, accountable leadership on matters that may threaten their identity and financial security. We need leaders who can admit when something bad has happened and recover the phones.

Better, we deserve leadership with the vision to see the threats, heed the warnings, and secure our infrastructure and your data before the hack occurs.

My Vision to Restore Our Information Technology and Database Security

Fill the Still Vacant and Vital Assistant To the General President of Information Technology Position

For far too long, the current leadership has failed to fill many key positions within the IAFF. None perhaps more vital or essential than the role of AGP of Information Technology. With this role vacant, the IAFF has been the likely victim of hacking, ransomware, and possible database breaches. Our members trust us with their personal data, union financials, and secure documents. We need a General President who understands the modern threats and has the capacity to engage the right specialists to keep our union safe and secure.

Release a Full Honest and Transparent Report on the September 2, 2022 IT Breach

Our membership deserves to know what happened on September 2, 2022. They deserve to know how much has been paid to Tetra Defense, Optimus Cyber Technology, and Linea Solutions.

And we deserve a full unredacted report from every consultant and contractor on the IT breach and possible ransomware attack on the IAFF.

Why did it happen? And why is the current leadership actively covering it up?

I'll Get The Phones Working And I'll Build A System To Keep Your Data Safe From The Next Attack

It is embarrassing that the current leadership can't get the office phones to work nearly a year after our database and servers were violated and breached.

As General President, when you call your headquarters I'll make sure there's more than a 1980's answering machine on the other end.

More than the phones, I'll ensure that your union is built to protect you and your data as we enter the age of Ai, deepfakes, and next-generation attacks.

Conversations involving our union are likely part of a federal investigation for an alleged illegal pay-for-play kickback scheme built, executed, and orchestrated by the current leadership, embroiling our IAFF FC.

I promise to follow the law, end illegal schemes, and bring responsible leadership back to our financial corporation.

Before the last recession in 2008 financial advisors would often refer or suggest certain funds, 401k plans, and mutual fund investments based NOT on their return but rather behind the scene kickback commissions paid to the brokers.

These schemes harmed retirees and cut possible profits for unknowing investors. Significant financial reform in the wake of the recession and market collapse made these pay-for-pay kickback schemes, commissions, and backroom deals illegal.

Now conversations with the IAFF FC are part of a SEC investigation. A former IAFF FC employee turned whistleblower sounded the alarm and was ignored by our current leadership. They were summarily dismissed and now have filed suit for breach of contract.

Worse, there are now claims and investigations into the origin and motivations of the pay-for-play scheme, with all roads leading to the top of our union.

We would never allow our employers to push a 457 deferred compensation plan or retirement plan that pushed investment funds that paid a commission back to the city manager or city general fund.

Yet that is exactly what the IAFF FC and current leadership have done with Hidrent and are now being accused of by Jack Hughes.

Our members have enough to worry about with predatory financial advisors and constant pension reform threats. Yet here we are with another broken promise and federal investigation.

Enough is enough. Promises made must be kept.

My Vision to Restore Responsible Leadership and Trust at the IAFF FC

Initiate A Thorough Review of All Investments and Programs

When the value exceeds the price, people buy.

The IAFF FC must provide value for our members, not just a unchecked revenue stream for our leadership to cut checks from. As General President, I will initiate a thorough review of every investment and financial product of the Financial Corp and will report back to the general membership within 180 days of taking office. More than an audit, my team will initiate an audit of principles and ensure that we are doing not just what is right but what is just.

Propose a Policy to Respect Established Funds and Programs

Local union autonomy and state rights matter within our union and international operation. The IAFF should not and shall not come into states, provinces, or districts intending to bully or assimilate other union investments, programs, or products by force.

We must respect the work, time, and labor of our affiliates who have delivered successful products and offerings. The IAFF does not force our locals to merge or affiliate with state associations, and we should not force local investments or healthcare trusts to affiliate or engage with the IAFF FC, especially if the affiliation could harm the investment or outcome of their membership.

Our Members Deserve Responsible Leadership

END CRONYISM AND BACKROOM DEALS

Restore our mission and commitment to hiring the best and brightest fire fighter union members to serve our mission and membership.

FOCUS OUR UNION TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE

Deliver a vision and plan for our members that will secure their future and protect their interests as the world evolves.

DELIVER ON THE PRINCIPLES OF LABOR

Rebuild the IAFF as the standard bearer of trade unionism, workers' rights, and political power now and for generations to come.

“Never miss an opportunity to secure a member for the union and never fail to patronize the union label!” — Fred W. Baer, IAFF President (1919-1946)
